A Springtime Caller
TASMANIAN STILL LIFE SERIES
“A Springtime Caller” by Emma Coombes is a Tasmanian still life that draws from the tradition of botanical artistry.
Part of a larger body of work, this image continues a concept that began with photographing Australian wildlife in a traditional still-life setting. Drawing on the botanical traditions of natural history illustration and the decorative softness of the Rococo style, it adopts a gentle visual language and shifts toward something lighter. When access to authentic taxidermy proved impossible, creative surrogates stood in. Native Australian flowers introduce soft pastels and a Rococo-inspired palette. Less dramatic than other works in the series, this image offers a tender reflection on our fragile relationship with the natural world.
Photographed in an historic Tasmanian location whose stone walls and natural window light offered a ready made baroque backdrop, the image is digitally crafted much like a painting. Sculpted through light and shadow, colour grading and textured layers applied to bring the wild things to life in a painterly premise.
Printed as an archival print on cotton rag, A Springtime Caller invites you to bring home a distinctive, painterly still life. An elegant focal point that blends natural beauty with storytelling.
