by Emma Coombes at the Elm & the Raven
A vivid ecosystem of colour and imagination, populated by bees, butterflies, and forms that hover somewhere between botanical and fantastical.

Product Description
IN THE GARDEN OF MY MIND – ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING
A tangle of thought and symbolism — part brain, part vine, part cosmic map. Bees, butterflies, black voids, and bursts of colour weave through the frame. There’s chaos, but also rhythm. A sense of inner logic beneath the surface. I wanted it to feel like something alive and evolving — a garden not of flowers, but of thoughts, memories, and imagination.
The composition leans into contrast: solid black negative space allows the bright, busy forms to glow with vibrancy, while also letting the eye rest.
Colour plays a key role in this work. I lean into saturation, contrast, and vibrancy not just for aesthetic pleasure, but to evoke emotion. There’s symbolism in the choices — pinks and oranges for warmth and intuition, black for the unknowable, electric blue for the spark of thought. These choices aren’t always conscious at the time, but they come from somewhere instinctual, pushing toward the childlike without being naïve. There’s a sense of internal chaos and beauty.
I don’t paint to replicate what I see. I paint to explore what’s inside — and to offer others a map back into their own imaginations.
